Things to Consider When Choosing A Fly-Fishing Reel
When it is time to buy a new fly fishing reel, and honestly, when isn’t the time, you might have some questions in mind. You may be wondering which fly fishing reels are best for you and how much you will be spending for one. This guide will discuss five important things to consider helping you make an informed decision:
Every fly
fishing reel comes with specific designs for particular types of fish. That’s
why the selection comes in different profiles, drags and line capacities. For
instance, Trout fishing reels design
allows them to work with a 2 to a 6-weight line and backing line, while salmon are
typically bigger because of the larger line weights and more backing line
needed for the species.
2. The number
of fly lines you use.
Today’s trout
anglers have a range of fly lines to suit different fishing conditions. They
typically have the multi cassette spool system, which lets them carry a range
of fly lines in different densities on the spare spools, which come with it.
That way, they can quickly and efficiently switch fly lines both on the water, and
on the bank.
3. Arbor size
That pertains
to the overall design and size of the fly fishing reels. When choosing
arbor size, think of balance for your rod.
The shorter the rod, a standard arbor typically is sufficient. For longer rods like Euro Nymphing rods in
the 10-13’ range, large arbor or even sizing up is the way to go. Also consider species. If you’re going after steelhead or salmon
that’s going to get you into your backing, you definitely want large
arbor. Most trout, panfish, and bass
are not going to be peeling out a lot of drag.
Standard arbor is more than adequate here.
4. Drag
For saltwater fly reels, you need a sealed
drag system that can effectively prevent saltwater ingress. As we all know, saltwater can cause havoc on
everything. Even with sealed drag
reels, I also wash my reels after each trip.
For freshwater fly fishing, you can consider either the same option or a
non-sealed drag system. It is more of
an expense question than anything. I
must say though, whenever I can, I go with a sealed drag.
